Justin Berns is a life-long Beachwood resident who grew up on Beechmont Court. After graduation from Beachwood High School, he attended The Ohio State University. His term as Mayor began January 1, 2022.
His long history of public service was inspired by his father, Sheldon Berns, a Beachwood City Councilman from 1970-1977. Mayor Berns’ civic involvement includes service as a Beachwood volunteer firefighter for 12 years, a member of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission and the Records Commission, and as president and co-president of the Beachwood Schools PTO.
Mayor Berns was appointed to City Council in 2010, elected to City Council in 2015 and won re-election in 2019. During his most recent City Council term, he was the chair of the Safety & Public Health and the Public Works Committees and also served on the Building & Grounds, Residential Housing and Legal & Personnel Committees. He was also council’s alternate to the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission.
In his commercial career, he is the president of Berns Custom Homes, specializing in the renovation and new construction of residential properties since 1992. His decades of experience have him “with unique knowledge regarding planning, budgeting and implementation of infrastructure improvements,” he said. He is putting that work on hold while serving as mayor.
His wife, Lisa, is a registered nurse/assistant nurse manager in the surgical intensive care unit at the Cleveland Clinic. They married in 2003 and have three children attending Beachwood High School. The Berns family enjoys vacationing on Marco Island and at Walt Disney World where Mayor Berns completed the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Dopey Challenge by completing foot races at the 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon distances over four consecutive days.
