From the Desk of Mayor Martin S. Horwitz: Mall Update

Over the past year and a half the City of Beachwood, primarily the police and fire departments, have been working very closely with Beachwood Place Mall management and security to make improvements concerning the security of the mall.   Huge strides have been made by both entities in terms of personnel and equipment to maximize security and the shopping experience.

On Saturday, our police department acted swiftly and effectively to bring the situation under control, detaining and identifying the parties involved.  The incident undoubtedly involved persons known to each other and thankfully, none of the violence was intended for innocent patrons.

There was a second event that is under investigation as well.   At this time, it does not appear to be a purposeful assault on any individual.  Every effort is being made to bring that portion of the incident to resolution.

I have personally been in contact with both the local Beachwood Place management team and the mall owners, GGP in Chicago.  As shocking and disheartening as Saturday’s events were, our safety forces alongside the Beachwood Place management team and security personnel, are confident that there is no inherent danger in the mall experience beyond what would be expected at any public place.  Our joint efforts over the past couple of years have been effective and we will continue to improve the feeling of safety and security throughout both Beachwood Place and the city in general.    Beachwood Place is a valuable asset to our community and the safety of its patrons and its continued success is one of our highest priorities.

I was on the scene minutes after the incident occurred and I personally want to thank Chief Haba and his force for their quick and professional response to the situation.  I want to thank Chief Kearns and our Fire Department for their support and I also want to express appreciation to safety forces from neighboring suburbs, the State Highway Patrol, our EDGE partners and the FBI.
