Beachwood Boredom-Busters: Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27)

Posted on May 24, 2019 at 1:20 PM by Mayor Martin S. Horwitz

It is Memorial Day weekend: please take some time to remember why this holiday exists. I am proud that our Community Services Department has created a 30' x 60' flag on the grass outside City Hall along Richmond Road north of Fairmount Blvd. to commemorate those who have died protecting our freedoms while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

ALL WEEKEND:
The Beachwood Family Aquatic Center, aka Beachwood's happy place, opens Saturday, May 25. Open Swim begins at 11:30 AM. Passes will be available for purchase on-site. Visit the BFAC webpage for more details on hours and admissions. My sincere thanks to the many Community Services and Public Works Department employees who prepared the facility for another wonderful season, and a warm welcome to the many seasonal employees who will ensure the safety and nutritional needs of the BFAC patrons!

Beachwood has established a new Pop-Up Park at the site of the former fire station (at Fire Station Drive and Chagrin Blvd., across from the Pavilion). This cheerful place is perfect for enjoying a picnic or bag lunch, reading a book, or meeting friends while soaking up some Vitamin D. The Pop-Up Park is free & open to the public but will come down around Labor Day: enjoy it while you can. Many thanks to NOACA for the Street Supplies!

Sunday, May 26:
The Beachwood Arts Council presents an “Inspirations from Vienna” concert from 2:00 – 3:00 PM at the Beachwood Community Center. Pianist Alicja Basinska, violinist Jeanelle Brierley, and French horn player Meghan Guegold will play classical music composed by Brahms, Korngold, and Schubert. Free and open to the public. Many thanks to sponsors Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and the Beachwood Arts Council.

Monday, May 27:
Tune in to NBC NIGHTLY NEWS Monday night – we’re hearing that they will feature our Memorial Day flag installation!

City Hall will be closed Monday in honor of Memorial Day. Also, all rubbish and recycling will be picked up one day after your typical collection day. If your typical collection day is Monday, your bins will emptied on Tuesday; if Tuesday, Wednesday; etc.

LOOKING AHEAD:

It’s Block Party season: contact my office for help with organizing and arranging for supplies and special guests for your 2019 Block Party.

Wednesday, May 29: Mix and Mingle for a Mission from 4:00 – 6:00 PM with the Beachwood-based chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association chapter. Visit https://www.facebook.com/events/2172056519510633/ for more information and to register.

Thursdays: EATS AND MEETS, a food-truck gathering from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the parking lot behind The Orlean Company at 23875 Commerce Park. Presented by the Beachwood Chamber of Commerce and The Orlean Company.

Sunday, June 2: Support The Gathering Place by participating in Race for the Place. Visit www.racefortheplace.com for more information and to register for this 5k or 1 Mile walk/run.

My best wishes for a safe Memorial Day weekend, everyone.
