We are proud to announce Beachwood's new rubbish collection
system. Key to this system are large, easy to move, rolling
rubbish carts. Residents on Bryden Road and Brian Drive have
used these carts successfully for the last three years.
The City of Beachwood will deliver one free rubbish cart
to each household. On your trash day, our mechanical-armed
trucks will pick up and dump the cart at curbside.
Your new trash cart is part of an automated program which
will increase the cleanliness and efficiency of rubbish collection
in our city.
The benefits include:
- Providing faster collection
- Keeping all odors and rubbish contained
- No lost pieces; lids are permanently attached
- Easy to load and maneuver carts
- Providing a safe, convenient, effective method of rubbish
collection
- Enhancing the appearance of the City of Beachwood
Keeping trash in its place is everyone's responsibility.
With your help, we can continue to make Beachwood a great
place to live.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. How do I use my cart?
A. Lift lid to place bagged rubbish inside cart. Keep
lid shut to prevent animals and precipitation from getting
in and rubbish and odors from getting out.
Q. What is the maximum weight of rubbish?
A. Cart can hold 200 pounds. Do not overload your cart.
Q. How should my cart be placed at the curb?
A. Carts should be placed on your tree lawn within
five feet of curb or street. Handles should face away from
the street with the arrow on the lid pointing to the street.
Keep your cart at least 3 feet away from stationary objects
such as mailboxes, fire hydrants, or utility poles.
Q. How do I recycle?
A. Carts are for rubbish only. Optional curbside recycling
will remain the same. It will remain a blue bag program.
Q. Will my trash pickup date change?
A. No. Your rubbish collection date will not change.
You will remain on the same weekly schedule.
Q. Will I have to pay for my new cart?
A. No. One 96-gallon cart will be delivered, free of
charge, to each household where the city provides rubbish
removal. Your new cart is numbered and registered to your
address. The cart provided by the City belongs to the address
where it is registered. It is the homeowner's responsibility
to replace lost or stolen carts.
Q. What if I need more than one cart?
A. After all new rubbish carts have been delivered
you may request a second cart for $51.89 by calling the
Public Service Department at 216-292-1922.
Q. What should I do with my old trash cans?
A. Your old rubbish cans may be placed on your tree
lawn for disposal or they may be taken to the Public Service
Department to be recycled.
Q. How do I store my cart?
A. Store your cart in a convenient location, preferably
out of view and away from heat sources such as furnaces
or grills.
Q. What if I have rubbish that will not fit in the
cart or require a special pick up for large items such
as appliances?
A. Any extra rubbish may be placed next to the cart
for pick up. For large items, please contact the Public
Service Department at (216) 292-1922 to request a special
pick up.
Q. What if I do not want to use the new cart?
A. You may continue to leave your rubbish as normal,
and return the cart.

Proper Disposal of Unwanted Medicine
One of the most commonly recommended methods of disposing of unwanted medication has been flushing the medicine down the toilet or rinsing it down the drain. Your doctor or pharmacist may even tell you to do so. But when medicines are flushed or rinsed down the drain, they flow to your septic tank or to your local wastewater treatment plant, where they can harm the beneficial bacteria that break down wastes. Septic tanks and municipal treatment plants are not designed to remove these medicines, so they may pass through the wastewater treatment plant unchanged. When the treated water is released into rivers and lakes, it can still contain these medicines.
The Safest Option
- Securely package the medication and put it in the trash, out of reach of children and animals.
Steps to Safe and Proper Disposal of Unwanted Medicine
- Keep the medication in its original packaging.
- Remove all personal information from the packaging.
- Make the medicine unusable (crush or dissolve pills with a small amount of water, or flour for liquids).
- Secure packaging with strong tape.
- Place the package inside a non-transparent container
- Place this container in with your household trash.

FREE Service to Reduce your Unwanted Catalogs
Over eight million tons of trees are consumed each year in the production of paper catalogs.
Now there's a free service that allows you to reduce the stream of unwanted catalogs flowing into your home: www.catalogchoice.org.
All you'll need is the customer number (printed near the name/address field on the back of the catalog). This process is much simpler than telephoning requests to stop. And the site maintains a record of catalogs you've eliminated.
Dates are TBD for 2008.
All you have to do:
- Spring - Leaves must be baged on the tree lawn to be picked up.
- Fall - Place unbagged leaves on the tree lawn (only),
not in the street. Leaf piles mixed with other debris
will not be picked up.
- After December 14th, all leaves need to be bagged and
will be removed on your regular rubbish day.
