City of Beachwood awarded "Best Adaptation of a Recycling
Program"
The Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District awarded "Best Adaptation of a Recycling
Program" 2006 Oscar Award
to the City of Beachwood. This Award was given to a community
that thinks outside the box and is not afraid to try new
things in order to increase the efficiency of its waste management
and recycling program.
In 2005, the City of Beachwood achieved a 19.69% increase
in its recycling rate by doing a few things differently,
such as starting a city-operated composting and brush grinding
operation to better manage the large amount of organic material
generated each year. Now, instead of paying to haul and dispose
of this material off-site, organic debris is composted to
produce mulch and humus used for landscaping needs. What
is not used is sold to produce money for the operation. This
creative solution to the costly problem of managing green
waste is saving the city about $13,000 annually. Who said
its not easy being green?
Accepting the award was Service Director, Dale Pekarek.
