City of Beachwood
Continues To Tighten Its Budget
BEACHWOOD, OHIO - At the October 18, 2010 council meeting, Beachwood officials passed legislation extending the current contracts with four of their five unions. City Officials have not yet had an opportunity to sit down with the International Association of Fire Fighter Union. However, all of the other unions have agreed to a contract extension freezing wages and benefits for the next year.
For the past several years, City officials have been looking at ways to save money. Council President Mark Mintz said, "As promised, we are continuing to tighten our belts." Mayor Gorden thanked the unions for supporting the administration's efforts stating, "We are optimistic the Fire Union will also agree to an extension. In the meantime, this should provide further encouragement to our residents to support the 1/2 percent tax levy."
At Monday night's council meeting, Mayor Gorden also publicly thanked the Beachwood Chamber of Commerce for supporting the 1/2 percent tax levy. "Since the majority of our residents do not actually earn wages in Beachwood, this tax will not cost them a single cent," said Gorden after the meeting. "I am optimistic the levy will pass and when it does, our unions and the Chamber will have our appreciation."
